Also known as ‘Happy Berries’, Goji berries are reputed to be the reason that Li Quing Yuen lived until he was 250 after eating them every day! In Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese traditional medicine, Goji berries have been used to increase energy, and to treat tinnitus and blurred vision. The effects on vision continue to be reputed: this is thought to be linked to high levels of beta carotene in the berries. They are also said to enhance immune function, increase sperm production, improve circulation, and protect the liver. Goji berries contain 60 – 70 % carbohydrate, and have relatively high levels of protein, fibre, antioxidants, amino acids, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium, riboflavin (B6), phytochemicals and bio-flavonoids.
